李白 送友人
青山橫北郭
白水遶東城
此地一為別
孤蓬萬里征
浮雲游子意
落日故人情
揮手自茲去
蕭蕭班馬鳴
Li Bai, "Sending off a Friend"
Green mountains 'round the north of the wall
White water curling around the east of the city
This is our parting place.
A lonely tumbleweed journeys ten thousand li。
I shall think of you as a floating cloud,
And when the sun sets think of your old friend.
We wave, leaving from here.
The horses cry again and again, xiao xiao.
(蕭 (xiāo) is one of my VERY FAVORITE characters in Chinese, and my favorite entry to peruse in new dictionaries. Many of the compounds it forms with other characters have to do with autumn winds, sadness, and yes - neighing horses. There is something so sad about the sound horses make at times, and yet something so soft. It seems appropriate to link it with the sound of wind and autumn leaves)
