Berkeley and Diana’s wedding was beyond lavish, taking place in the grounds of one of the ritziest country clubs in the New York area, in a pavilion practically swamped with flowers, bunting, and other decorations. A string quartet played something classical as the bride made her way down the carpeted aisle, between the rows of chairs where a good five-hundred guests were seated.
After the ceremony itself, and the photographs, everyone went inside to an equally grand reception in the club’s ballroom, with a fully catered three-course dinner, a seven-tier wedding cake, ice sculptures, an open bar, and a small orchestra playing sedate dinner music.
Dee felt totally out of place in his rented tux. He was only there as Ryo’s plus one since there was no way either the bride or the groom would have invited him otherwise.
“Kinda fancy isn’t it?” he murmured to his lover.
“A bit over the top,” Ryo murmured back. “But I guess Berkeley can afford it, and with some of the people on the guest list…” He shrugged. “They probably expect this kind of extravagance. As long as the bride and groom are happy, that’s what matters.”
“Y’know, all this could’a been yours,” Dee pointed out. “If you’d picked him over me.”
Ryo laughed, incredulous. “No, it wouldn’t have been. Even if I’d gone out with him, it never would’ve led to marriage. I might have been good enough to sleep with, even to show off at certain events, but he’s high society, and I’m not. I could be a fun diversion for him, but never the love of his life.”
Dee turned to look at his partner. “You don’t sound disappointed.”
“I’m not. Why would I be? All this fancy décor, the sophistication, it’s not me. I’m just an ordinary guy. As much fun as it’s been to dress up for one day, I couldn’t live like this.”
“You could’a had the best of everything.”
“The most expensive, perhaps, but not the best. I love my life, Dee. There’s nothing I need that I don’t already have. I made the right choice.”
