A/N: Triple drabble.
Eggs in the supermarket were always nice and clean, arranged snugly in their cartons, and brown or sort of pale tan. These were eggs too, but they were mucky, some had feathers stuck to them, and they were white as chalk. Dee hadn’t been prepared for that; they hardly looked like real eggs at all, more like fake ones.
He’d been even less prepared for the fact that, to retrieve the eggs, he might first have to move the chickens out of the way. They had claws, and sharp beaks, and this one was looking at him funny, like it was trying to decide whether to bite him. He stared back at it, trying to look as intimidating as possible, but he didn’t think it was working.
“How’s the egg collecting going?” Ryo asked, leaning into the chicken coop.
“Got a few.” Dee held up the basket, containing maybe fifteen eggs. “Not sure the other chickens are gonna give up theirs though.” Especially not the one currently glaring at him with its beady little eyes.
Chuckling, Ryo stepped inside and reached under the chicken. It shifted, muttering something uncomplimentary at Ryo in chicken language, but didn’t attack; Dee suspected if he’d tried that, he would’ve lost a couple of fingers. Maybe chickens could sense fear. Not that Dee was afraid of them, just wary since he’d never really had to deal with them up close and personal, except that time he’d been assaulted with one, and that didn’t count. The chicken hadn’t appreciated being used as a living weapon.
“They won’t hurt you,” Ryo assured him.
“I know that. What’s with the eggs though? Do they start out white before turnin’ brown?”
Ryo burst out laughing. “No, doofus! Different breeds lay different coloured eggs.”
“Huh. Learn somethin’ new every day.”
