A/N: Triple drabble.
“Not like that!” Ryo said, laughing as he watched Dee hacking away at a log from their rented cabin’s woodpile. “Haven’t you ever chopped wood before?”
“Not much call for it in the city.” Dee looked at the bits he’d chopped off. “Not makin’ much progress, am I? Guess I’m not cut out for rural livin’.” He felt a bit useless; Ryo seemed to know how to do everything, but Dee supposed he’d learned the necessary skills on family vacations.
“It’s okay, we can use those bits as kindling. Give me the axe and I’ll show you what to do, then you can give it another try. Just takes a while to get the hang of some things.” Ryo took his shirt off, hung it over a branch, and pulled on a pair of worn leather gloves before taking the axe.
“What’s with the gloves?”
“Helps keeps most blisters at bay. Stand back.” Setting a log upright on the chopping block, Ryo swung the axe, splitting the wood down the middle. He was a lot stronger than he looked, something Dee was well aware of, but he was still impressed. He watched avidly as Ryo set one half of the log he’d just split back on the block. Another swing of the axe left him with two smaller pieces, and he treated the other half log the same way. “Like that, see?”
“Damn, I could watch ya do that all day!”
Ryo grinned, handing Dee the axe and gloves. “Your turn. Just remember to stand the logs upright so you’re splitting them along the grain.”
“Okay, here goes.” Positioning a new log on the block, Dee swung the axe, whooping as the log split. “How’s that?”
“Perfect.”
“I learn fast.” Dee would go to any lengths to impress his lover.
