“That’s gonna be us someday,” Dee said, nodding in the direction of an elderly couple sitting on a bench, holding hands, and smiling at each other with so much love it was beautiful to see. “You and me, sittin’ on a back porch somewhere, rockin’ together in our rockin’ chairs, holdin’ hands, and still just as much in love as we are right now.” He squeezed Ryo’s hand. “Everyone’s gonna wonder what our secret is.”
“There’s no secret, just love, respect, patience, understanding, and a willingness to work through any problems together. People these days are too ready to jump ship the moment anything goes wrong in their relationship instead of putting in the work. Good relationships don’t just happen. They take work and communication. We had our share of rough patches before we got better at talking about the things that were bothering us.”
“We did, but we never gave up. No one gets anywhere by jumpin’ overboard every time the boat starts to rock. When that happens, we just hold on tighter. Y’know, we’d make pretty good relationship counsellors.”
“If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather stick with the career I already have. It’s probably safer.”
