Pride Month! Dee grinned, feeling that for once everything was right with the world, or at least his little corner of it. Here he was, strolling along the boardwalk at Coney Island on a gloriously sunny June day, Pride flags fluttering in the breeze off the sea, and his arm around his baby. Life was good. Turning his head, he pressed a kiss to Ryo’s temple, just because he could.

“What was that for? Not that I’m complaining or anything.”

“Because the sun’s shinin’, and we got two days off in the middle of frickin’ June! See all the flags flyin’? They’re for us, and for everyone like us, to celebrate who we are, and it feels great!”

“It does,” Ryo agreed, his arm tightening around Dee’s waist possessively. Normally he hated when people stared at them just because they were holding hands, or simply walking close enough together for their shoulders to brush, but today they weren’t being met with scowls.

Maybe it was because it was Pride, maybe just because the sun was high in a bright blue, cloudless sky, the weather about as perfect as it could possibly get, but it seemed as though everyone who looked their way was smiling, sharing their happiness. Even in New York, encountering so much open acceptance was rarer than it ought to be, but that just made it something to be cherished while it lasted.

Besides, why shouldn’t people stare? It had taken Ryo a few years, but he’d come to realise he and Dee looked pretty damn good together, Dee with his black hair and olive skin, Ryo with his lightly tanned skin and honey-gold hair, streaked now where the sun had lightened it. The close-fitting rainbow t-shirts they were wearing didn’t hurt either, and their matching shades gave them a subtle air of mystery.

“What d’ya wanna do first?” Dee asked, breaking through Ryo’s contented thoughts.

“Mm, hadn’t thought that far ahead, I was just enjoying being in the moment.”

“We can keep doin’ that if ya want. No need to do anything you don’t wanna do.”

“How about we keep walking, see what there is to do before we settle on anything, but get ice cream to enjoy while we walk.”

“I love the way you think.”

“Then later, we can ride the roller coaster, feel the wind in our hair.”

Dee laughed. “Sounds good to me!”

The End
