The sun was shining, the weather was warm, and Ryo was stuck at his desk in the small office he shared with Dee at the 27th Precinct. It was frustrating. He didn’t mind being on desk duty, had been glad yesterday that he didn’t have to traipse around the city doing the legwork part of being a detective, but it had been pouring with rain then. Dee and Ted, who’d accompanied him to interview potential witnesses, had arrived back soaked to the skin. Today though…

Once again Ryo found himself staring out the window instead of working, wishing he could be outside enjoying the warm sunshine and fresh breeze instead of sitting in a stuffy office. He would have opened the window by his desk, but it was stuck.

‘Just like me,’ he thought, cursing the bad luck that had left him hobbling around on crutches because of a sprained knee. The worst part was that it wasn’t even work-related. He’d slipped in the showers at the gym, and by the time he’d gotten home, his knee had swelled up like a balloon. He’d spent the next five hours at the ER, making sure nothing was broken or dislocated, before being sent home on crutches and wearing a knee brace, with orders to keep his weight off his knee for at least the next three weeks, at which time the injury would be reevaluated.

So here he was, stuck indoors on the first sunny day in almost two weeks, when he would have much preferred to be outside. Getting injured sucked.

He was so wrapped up in self-pity that he didn’t even hear Dee come in.

“And I thought I was havin’ a bad day.”

Ryo jerked upright in his seat. “Dee! You’re back!”

“Can’t slip anything past you, can I?” Dee teased. “What’s got you lookin’ so gloomy?”

“The weather, like you need to ask.”

“What?” Dee frowned. “It’s a beautiful day!”

“I know, and where am I? Cooped up in here, barely mobile. It’s so stuffy I’m getting a headache, and the window won’t open.”

“Good thing I came back before pickin’ up lunch.” Dee wheeled Ryo’s desk chair out of the way and set to work on getting the window unstuck. As soon as it opened, a gust of fresh air blew in.

“Thanks, Dee. That’s so much better.”

“Anything for you, babe. You just gotta ask.”

The End
