Dee froze when he heard the squeak, looking first at Ryo, who’d sounded fine a little while ago and probably hadn’t developed laryngitis in the last ten minutes, then glancing uneasily around the apartment, scanning the shadowy corners where the light didn’t reach.
“Something wrong?” Ryo, becoming aware of his lover’s stillness, looked up from his book.
“I don’t know. Think maybe we have a mouse.”
Closing his book, Ryo set it aside. “What makes you think that?”
“Didn’t you hear a squeak just now?”
“To be honest, I wasn’t really listening,” Ryo admitted. “I don’t think mice go around squeaking though, they’re usually quiet as… well, mice.”
“But I heard somethin’ squeak, I’m sure of it.”
“And you immediately assumed there was a mouse?”
“Not immediately. Last time anything was squeakin’, it was you.”
“That was three years ago! Never letting me forget that, are you?”
“Nope.” Dee grinned. “It was kinda cute.”
“I’m glad someone enjoyed it. I sure as hell didn’t.”
“Yeah, I know. You’re not the best patient.”
“Neither are you.”
Dee shrugged. “Point.” He moved, leaning in to kiss his lover, and stopped, hearing the squeak again.
Ryo snickered. “Okay, I heard it that time, but I think it’s coming from you.”
Sheepishly, Dee looked down at the new boots he was wearing, breaking them in around the apartment before wearing them outside. He shifted one foot experimentally, hearing the boot sole squeak against the polished hardwood floor. “Guess I can stop worryin’ about mice.”
