A/N: Quadruple drabble.
“What’s all this?” Dee said, indicating the glossy papers scattered across the coffee table.
Ryo looked up from the leaflet he was perusing and shrugged. “Travel brochures.”
“I can see that. What I don’t know is why.”
“Wishful thinking?”
“It would haveta be. It’s the middle of winter, and we’re practically broke.”
“We’re not that badly off. Okay, so our savings are a bit lower than we might like…”
“A bit?” They’d had a lot of unexpected expenses over the past three months, which had seen their once healthy bank balances take a rather alarming dip. “Talk about understatement.”
“The overtime we’ve been taking on recently has helped.”
“Not enough for us to be takin’ a winter vacation.”
“Who said anything about winter? Just because we can’t afford to go anywhere right now, doesn’t mean we can’t start planning something for this summer, get a good deal with an advance booking.”
Dee glanced at the vistas of blue water on display and shook his head. “Babe, sorry to disappoint ya, but even if we score the best deal in the universe, with the way our luck’s been goin’ there’s no way we’re gonna afford a tropical vacation this summer, maybe not even next year.”
Ryo laughed. “Tropical? Look closer. I was thinking more along the lines of Lake Tahoe. Fly to San Francisco and take a bus the rest of the way. Aunt Elena told me she’s been piling up the air miles with all the travelling she’s been doing on photography assignments. She said she’ll be able to get us return flights, business class, for practically nothing, so all we’ll have to pay for are the bus, or car rental, accommodations at one of the resorts, and incidentals.”
“What’s at Lake Tahoe?” Dee slid onto the sofa beside his lover and picked up one of the brochures.
“You mean aside from a massive lake?” Ryo grinned. “Hiking, kayaking, boating, swimming, loads of other lake activities and water sports. What d’you think?”
Flipping through the brochures full of photos of the mountain lake itself and the glorious scenery surrounding it, Dee grinned. “You reckon we really could?”
“Of course. I wouldn’t be looking otherwise. No point getting our hopes up if there’s no chance.”
“Does look pretty great, and you know I’m always up for a bit of kayaking.”
Spreading out the brochures, they set about deciding where to stay.
