Hearing their apartment door open, Ryo came out of the kitchen, drying his hands.
“Dinner’s almost ready.” He frowned suddenly. “Is everything okay?”
“Fine,” Dee replied, awkwardly pulling his boots off one-handed, because the dog was tucked in his other arm. “Why wouldn’t it be?”
“You tell me. The way you’re holding the dog, I thought maybe he’d hurt himself.”
“What?” Dee straightened up, surprised. “No, nothin’ like that. We went to the park, and he got his paws all wet and muddy. I didn’t want him leavin’ dirty pawprints everywhere, and unlike yours truly, he doesn’t know how to wipe his feet on the mat.”
Ryo laughed, shaking his head. “I’ll get a towel.” He disappeared into the bathroom to fetch a hand towel from the laundry hamper, handing it to Dee. “Dry the dog, then put him down and wash your hands if you want to eat.”
Carting Dick over to the sofa, Dee thoroughly cleaned the miniature dachshund’s paws, then rubbed his underside dry where his low-slung body had gotten wet from the grass. Dick squirmed with pleasure on his lap.
“You’re a whole lot of hard work, you know that?” But somehow, he didn’t really mind.
