Aiming a roundhouse kick at the pad Giles was holding, and almost knocking her Watcher off his feet in the process, Buffy paused. She’d worked up a sweat, but unlike Giles, she was still breathing easily.
“Why are we doing this?”
“What?” Lowering the pad, Giles adjusted his glasses, staring at her owlishly.
“This. You, me, punching, kicking…”
“Ah, your training. We do it to hone your skills, teach you new techniques, and keep you in peak physical condition.”
“Which is all to the good,” Buffy agreed. “But you have me training for a couple of hours every night, then when I’m worn out, you send me off on patrol to fight for my life against demons and monsters. Seems a bit counterproductive, if you ask me.”
“Oh, ah…” Setting the pad aside, Giles polished his glasses, frowning. “Yes, well, perhaps the training is unnecessarily rigorous; you do seem to have mastered the basic techniques, and many of the more advanced ones.”
“I’m glad you agree,” Buffy said, tone dry as dust.
“Hm? Yes, quite. Perhaps we might reduce training time to an hour in the afternoon, followed by your homework. That way you’ll be refreshed when it’s time for you to go out on patrol.” Slipping his glasses back on, Giles gave Buffty a questioning look.
“Works for me. And on weekends?”
“Stretching exercises, aerobics, work on your stamina. I think I can trust you to be sensible.”
Buffy nodded. “That should cover all the bases. Okay, it’s a plan. And now I gotta go patrol. See you tomorrow after classes!”
OoOoOoO
“How did it go with Giles?” Willow asked when Buffy arrived at The Bronze.
“Okay, I think. I got him to cut training to one hour a day after classes, weekends off from the one-on-one. I’m on the honor system to do my exercises like a good little Slayer.”
“That’s a relief!”
“I know, right? Giles is so dedicated and determined, but I’m not sure how much more he can take. I mean, he’s mom’s age, and you’ve seen him after training, all red, sweaty, and wheezing.”
“The wheezing’s only when you knock all the breath out of him.”
“Well yeah, but that only happens when he’s tired and drops his guard. Honestly, I was starting to worry that I’d be the first Slayer to kill her Watcher. He pushes himself too hard. It’s not good for him.”
