When Ryo returned to work two days after running the New York marathon, he was greeted with applause and cheering, which was embarrassing. He’d taken on the challenge to raise money for Mother’s orphanage, not for any kind of acclaim, but somehow it seemed word had spread to the entire precinct.
Okay, so he hadn’t kept what he was doing a secret; it had been common knowledge that he was in training for the race, and many of his colleagues at the two-seven had sponsored him, but even so, there was no need for them to make such a big deal about it.
“Smile for your fans,” Dee murmured beside him.
“Was this reception your idea?” Ryo threw a suspicious look his partner’s way, and Dee raised his hands in surrender.
“Not guilty, I swear, but ya can’t blame them for wantin’ to celebrate your success. No one from the two-seven ever ran the marathon before, you’re our first, and I know a lot of the guys didn’t think you’d finish. You proved ‘em all wrong.”
“I didn’t do it for anyone here.”
“I know ya didn’t, so do they, but that doesn’t mean they’re gonna ignore our marathon champ!”
