Dee should have been asleep, he was tired enough, but instead he was lying here in the tent, wide awake, listening to his lover’s peaceful breathing and envying Ryo for being able to drift off so easily. They were in the middle of nowhere, where there were no strong walls or securely locked doors to protect them from whatever might be lurking in the dark, and he couldn’t keep from thinking about wolves, and bears, and cougars, or even escaped lunatics! If anything bad happened way out here, their bodies might never be found!
He was about to close his eyes and try to sleep when he heard a rustling sound, then a sort of grunt. Were there wild boars in these mountains? Dammit, he should’ve checked stuff like that before letting Ryo drag him to the back of beyond on a camping trip! Reaching over, being as quiet as he could, Dee shook Ryo’s shoulder. His lover woke immediately, rolling over to face him.
“Dee? What’s wrong?”
“Did ya hear that?” Dee whispered.
“Hear what?”
“There’s somethin’ out there! I heard it!”
“We’re camped in the forest, Dee, there’s wildlife all around us. Of course you’re gonna hear things. Go to sleep; there’s nothing to worry about.”
“How can you say that? Any minute now, whatever’s out there could rip its way inside our tent and eat us!” The grunt sounded again. “There! I know you heard that, don’t deny it. We should’a brought our guns. We’re doomed!”
Ryo snorted softly. “Drama queen. Nothing’s gonna eat us; deer generally prefer grass and leaves.”
“Deer?”
“Yes.”
“You’re sure it’s not wild boar, bears?”
Sighing, Ryo crawled over to the window. “See for yourself.”
Dee looked out. A herd of deer were grazing nearby.
“Oh.”
“Now will you let me sleep?”
