Dee didn’t like dogs, never had and never would. Some folk considered dogs to be a man’s best friend, but in Dee’s opinion anyone who thought that way needed their head examined. Dogs were smelly, noisy, they shed everywhere, and if that wasn’t enough, they were vicious monsters, especially the small, yappy ones. He wouldn’t trust a dog if his life depended on it.
Okay, so police dogs were well-trained and useful, their keen sense of smell made them good at tracking people, or locating stashes of drugs, explosives, stuff like that, but pet dogs were at best a nuisance and at worst constituted an actual danger for a cop trying to do his job.
Here he and Ryo were, investigating the scene of an armed robbery, and the store’s owner had a dog that was running around the place loose, probably contaminating any evidence the criminals might have left behind. As they entered the premises, the little beast came out of nowhere, baring a mouthful of sharp yellow teeth, yapping, growling, and snarling viciously. Made Dee wonder why it hadn’t defended its owner while she was being robbed at gunpoint. Not much of a guard dog if it couldn’t tell the cops from the robbers.
Afterwards, Dee couldn’t explain why he did what he did, it was just a random impulse, but as the fluffy bundle of attitude lunged for him, growling, he spun around and snarled back at it. The dog froze, staring up at him, its eyes practically bulging out of its head, then turned and fled, yipping in panic, to hide behind its owner. It was remarkably satisfying.
Turning to his partner, Dee grinned. “Hey, did ya see that? Just call me Dee the Dog Whisperer.”
Ryo snorted. “Traumatising a Pekingese doesn’t make you pack leader.”
