“What’s in the box?” Drake didn’t consider himself nosy, just naturally curious, a good trait for a detective.
“A little treat for everyone.” Dee grinned as he set the plastic box on his desk and removed the lid. “Homegrown tomatoes, picked fresh this mornin’.”
“Tomatoes?” Drake’s face fell. “I thought maybe it was some of Ryo’s cookies or cupcakes, something good.”
“You sayin’ my tomatoes aren’t good enough for ya?” Dee scowled at his friend. “I grew these myself. Picked ‘em too.”
Drake shrugged, “Not really a big fan of tomatoes, they’re kinda tasteless.”
“Ha! That’s where you’re wrong! You know your problem? You’ve only ever had those mass-produced supermarket tomatoes, grown for uniform color and shape. These are different. I’ve got cherry tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, even these!” He held up a sprig of small, olive-green fruits. “Green grape.”
“They’re not even ripe,” Drake grumbled.
“Sure they are!” Dee plucked one and tossed it into his mouth, biting into it. “Damn, that’s good. ‘Course, if you’re too chicken to try anythin’ different…”
Never one to back down from a dare, Drake gingerly accepted a green tomato. Biting into it, the flavor burst onto his tongue.
“Wow! You’re right, that’s amazing!”
