Title: Grateful
Author: badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, Ianto.
Rating: PG-15
Written For: Challenge 751: Outside at tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Jack suffers a particularly nasty death, but Ianto is there for him.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.

None of Jack’s deaths are fun, not for witnesses and definitely not for Jack himself. Even after decades of dying and coming back, it’s not something anyone should be expected to get used to.

Dying hurts, even when he barely has time to register what’s happening before he’s gone, and coming back is just as bad. Slow deaths and resurrections are the worst though, when he bleeds out, then comes back while the damage is still repairing itself so that he feels every excruciating moment.

He knew as it happened that this would be a bad one, there’s nothing good about being ripped almost in half, but he’s beyond grateful for Ianto’s stoicism and calm efficiency. Without having to look, Jack knows there are bits of him on the outside that should be on the inside, and although Ianto looks pale and horrified, he doesn’t hesitate, quickly shoving everything back where it belongs.

Jack offers up a weak smile that’s more of a grimace and mouths the words ‘Thank you’ as his lover kneels beside him, holding his hand. He knows Ianto will watch over him while he’s dead, and comfort him as he revives. It’s more than he deserves.
