From the moment he stepped into the squad room, Dee was uncomfortably aware of JJ watching him like a hawk. He honestly would have preferred to be under the Chief’s scrutiny, with all the bellowing that usual entailed; at least he could be sure his boss’s interest was strictly professional, making sure he was getting on with his job rather than slacking off. JJ’s interest, on the other hand, was of a far more personal nature.

“Will you quit starin’ at me like that? You’re givin’ me the creeps!” Dee scowled across at the smaller man, only thankful that JJ hadn’t jumped up and started fussing over him.

“I was only making sure you didn’t need help with anything!” JJ protested, looking a little hurt.

“I’m perfectly capable of walkin’ across a room and sittin’ down without help!” Dee reached his desk and sank gratefully if cautiously into his chair, mindful of it being on wheels. Maybe he should have requisitioned an ordinary chair for the duration, but his regular one was familiar and comfortable, not to mention higher than the ones without wheels. Standing his crutches in the trash bin and leaning them against his desk, he glanced at JJ to see if he was still watching; he was, but now with a relieved smile on his face. “No help needed, see?”

“Yes, well done!” JJ beamed at him.

“Ya wouldn’t be that concerned if Ryo was the one with the broken leg,” Dee grumbled sourly.

“Of course I would, I’d be concerned about any of my friends! Getting around on crutches isn’t easy, and it’s not like Ryo could help you if you lost your balance. I just wanted to be ready to assist if you needed it. That’s what friends do.”

“Well I didn’t need it, so ya don’t haveta keep watchin’ me. I’m just gonna sit right here, do paperwork, and answer the phone until the end of shift.”

“Don’t mind him,” Ryo said, sinking stiffly into his own seat and trying to find a position that didn’t aggravate his bruises. He had one arm strapped against him to help immobilise his broken collarbone while it healed. “He’s annoyed at everyone and everything at the moment. You know how much he hates being on desk duty.”

“We wouldn’t even be in this mess if that drunken asshole hadn’t run a red light and hit our car!”

The End
