Sometimes Dee had to wonder whether he should throw in the towel, just give up his pursuit of the unattainable and let Ryo continue with his delusional belief that he was straight. It might be safer.
He hadn’t anticipated the difficulties that would be involved, not to mention the danger to life and limb. He’d figured any time they were alone together he could work on chipping away at the walls Ryo had built up around himself; how hard could that be? Except they were hardly ever alone together when they weren’t on the job, and even when they were, it didn’t last.
Every time Dee had Ryo right where he wanted his gorgeous partner, in his arms, and melting into a kiss, Ryo’s self-appointed guardian would materialise out of thin air.
Well, okay, Bikky probably didn’t really do that; he wasn’t some kind of stealth ninja, just a pre-teen kid. But even so, how did he always know? Was Ryo sending out distress signals at a pitch only a kid could hear? Was the rugrat telepathic? Something freaky had to be going on.
If it had only happened now and then Dee could have brushed it off as coincidence; Ryo’s apartment was now Bikky’s home too, so it stood to reason that he might occasionally burst in on them. But every time? That was stretching things too far, especially since they were just as likely to be interrupted at Dee’s place.
Dee might not even have minded the kid showing up if he’d just yelled threats and left it at that, but no, he invariably launched a full-on attack when Dee was in no position to defend himself, kicking, punching, biting, scratching… Retaliation was out of the question, knocking the kid on his ass wouldn’t look good, even if it was self-defence, but Dee got enough bruises from JJ’s demonstrations of affection without being used as Bikky’s punching bag.
Was the occasional smooch worth the physical abuse being inflicted on him by his nemesis? Dee remembered the feel of Ryo’s soft lips against his own…
Yeah, totally worth it.
