Jack had told Gwen to leave it, to stop investigating the missing people. He’d made it a direct order and yet she still refused to let well enough alone. Her defiance made him angry and frustrated; just once he wished she’d listen and not try to push for more, not demand to know what he was keeping from her.
He’d thought her stubbornness an asset when he’d recruited her, and in some cases it was. She just didn’t seem to understand that there were some things she was better off not knowing, didn’t get that there were valid reasons behind the orders he gave, reasons she was not entitled to know. It was past time she learned.
That was why he did it, why he had Ianto leave the package with the GPS on Gwen’s desk. He hadn’t wanted her to know the truth, but she was just going to keep digging anyway, so let her see for herself: Flat Holm, the returned Rift victims, all of it.
He knew it would upset her, that she’d be angry with him for not doing more, but maybe she’d finally understand. No matter how hard they tried, some things couldn’t be fixed.
