Buffy stands in the middle of a largely deserted Sunnydale, straining her ears against the almost complete silence, listening for the smallest sound. It’s the middle of the night; most people are probably in bed, asleep, hoping to wake in the morning and find this bizarre silence was nothing more than a bad dream. She envies them, because she knows better.
It's a nightmare, for sure, but that doesn’t make it any less real. If she listens hard enough, she can hear the distant sound of traffic out on the freeway, the faint whisper of leaves rustling in the breeze, and the even fainter pounding of her own heartbeat. That's it; no stray cats yowling, no sleepy birds twittering in the trees, no radios or televisions blaring out in the dark, and absolutely no voices.
She’s patrolled in the dead of night more times than she can remember and until now she’s always found it peaceful. This is anything but. It’s silence on a level so profound it almost hurts her ears, so loud it’s deafening. Unlike other nights, there’s nothing soothing about the quiet; it’s unnatural, unnerving. Whatever the cause, Buffy knows it’s up to her to fix it.
