They’d had plans for the evening; dinner out after work, and then probably a movie, but by the time the end of their shift rolled around the weather had changed from cold and dry to heavy rain bordering on sleet. The thought of queueing outside a cinema, or even of having to walk from wherever they parked to a restaurant, suddenly seemed far less appealing.

“So much for our plans. Good thing we didn’t book a table,” Dee said, coming to join his lover just inside the precinct’s main doors, staring out at the foul weather.

“I was just thinking the same thing,” Ryo agreed. “Rain check on our evening out?”

“Suits me. What d’ya say we get takeout instead and spend the evenin’ where it’s warm and dry?”

“Sounds good.” Ryo winced as a gust of wind drove rain against the doors, slushy droplets slapping against the glass before sliding downwards. “First we have to get to the car though, and I don’t think my umbrella would survive in that wind.”

“Guess we’ll just haveta put our heads down and run for it. Good thing it’s not far.” Dee had managed to get a parking spot fairly close to the entrance that morning. “Ready for the thirty-yard sprint?”

Ryo nodded. “Doesn’t look like it’s gonna get any better out there. Let’s do this.”

Tugging their coat collars higher, they pulled the doors open and plunged out into the deluge, slipping a little on the icy sludge that was already beginning to cover the ground, but managing not to fall.

Less than an hour later, they were snuggled up on their sofa, eating curry and listening to the rain hammering on the windows.

“Evenings out are good,” Ryo said between mouthfuls. “But sometimes an evening in can be even better.”

The End
