Bikky didn’t believe in Santa Claus; he knew the jolly old man with the red suit and the white beard was just a story parents told their kids, and he was fine with that. He didn’t spoil it for the kids who did believe; they’d find out the truth soon enough anyway.

The first Christmas after he came to live with his foster father, he’d told Ryo he knew the truth, and although Ryo had been disappointed at not being able to share that particular Christmas magic with his son, he’d taken it well.

Now though, Bikky wished he did believe, because there’d been one particular thing he’d really, really wanted for Christmas, and he hadn’t gotten it. Maybe the disappointment would have been easier to bear if he could have believed Santa had decided he hadn’t been a good enough boy to deserve that one special gift, rather than thinking he’d asked Ryo for too much. He knew his dad wasn’t rich, and he’d gotten a lot of the other things he’d put on his Christmas list, so perhaps if he hadn’t been so greedy, if he’d just asked for a couple of things, he might have gotten the one he’d wanted most of all.

The worst part was that he couldn’t let his disappointment show. Ryo had given him so much, he knew how lucky he was, and he didn’t want to seem ungrateful, especially when he wasn’t sure he deserved all the toys and clothes and other cool stuff. He was doing better in school, but he could still probably work harder. Maybe if he improved his grades next semester and asked again closer to his birthday…

“I’m sorry you didn’t everything you wanted for Christmas, Biks,” Ryo said, coming to sit beside him on the floor.

“That’s okay,” Bikky said quickly. “I shouldn’t have asked for so much.”

“You didn’t; you should have seen some of the lists I made when I was a kid.” Ryo grinned. “One year I even asked for a pony and a sports car; didn’t get either one. I was probably six or seven.”

“I’d never ask for anything like that! Where would I put a pony?”

“My parents said the same thing. Anyway, you’ll have to wait a bit for your last gift; it was out of stock.”

Bikky’s eyes lit up. “You mean…?”

“Yes, you’ll still get your bicycle.”

The End
