Ryo fidgeted uncomfortably. “I’ll be glad to get these stitches out tomorrow; they itch like crazy.”
“That’s a good sign,” Dee told him. “Means you’re healin’.”
“I suppose. Just wish it didn’t make me want to scratch all the time.” He pressed his palm over the spot on his leg where a sharp piece of wire had ripped a gash in his leg nine days earlier and tried to massage the itch away. When it had first happened, he’d been more annoyed at having ruined a good pair of pants than about getting injured. He hadn’t given any thought to the other inevitable consequences of his injury. Now though…
He hadn’t minded being on desk duty while his leg healed, hadn’t fussed about using a cane to get around, had really been taking everything in stride, right up until the itching had started. He couldn’t concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes at a time, kept waking up in the night because of unconsciously scratching at the wound in his sleep, and was constantly fidgeting. He’d had mosquito bites that had itched less, and at least he’d been able to put Calamine on those. All he could do about this was endure the maddening sensation and try his best not to scratch, despite wanting nothing more than to claw his leg off.
“Do you think they’d take the stitches out today if I asked? Or maybe I could remove them myself. All I’d have to do is snip through each one and pull it out; it can’t be that difficult.”
“The doc said ten days, babe, not nine. Maybe it’d help if ya put ice on it; cold’s supposed to be soothin’ for a lot of things.”
“Worth a try, I suppose. Just wish it was tomorrow already.”
