Dee gazed gloomily up at the sky where black clouds were gathering. “Looks like we’re in for a storm. Where was it when we were in the middle of that heatwave a few weeks back? Could’a used it then to clear the air. Forecast kept sayin’ there were gonna be storms but they never happened; now we don’t need it, we’re gonna get it.” He turned up the collar of his leather jacket, hunching his shoulders against the chilly wind that was gusting around them.

“There were storms, they just never reached New York, blew themselves out over the Atlantic.” Ryo didn’t seem to be bothered by the chill, but his coat was a lot warmer than Dee’s jacket. He tipped his head back, enjoying the wind; summer was already becoming a memory as fall settled over the city.

“Yeah? Well I wish this one would do the same.” Even as Dee finished speaking, thunder rumbled in the distance and the sky grew even darker, blocking out the afternoon sunlight. “What’re we doin’ just standin’ around here?”

Ryo quirked a grin. “How should I know? You’re the one who stopped to look at the sky.”

A stronger gust of wind caught them, plucking at their hair, and lightning flickered against purplish clouds.

“We’re gonna get soaked if we stay here, we should head back to the car. C’mon.” Dee tugged at Ryo’s sleeve, tearing his gaze away from the ominous sky as he set off along the sidewalk.

The first raindrops started falling before they were halfway to where they’d parked.

“You know we’d have already been in the car if you hadn’t stopped,” Ryo commented.

“I know!” Dee speeded up, clicking the key fob as they neared their unmarked sedan. They scrambled inside just in time; there was a brilliant flare of lightning, a crash of thunder that reverberated off the surrounding buildings, and then the rain was coming down in sheets, hammering on the roof of their car. It was like being inside a drum.

Ryo was laughing, pushing damp hair out of his eyes. “Look at that! Isn’t weather amazing? I love storms,” he shouted over the din.

Dee wasn’t looking at the rain, his eyes were fixed on his partner, flushed and gorgeous, revelling in the wild weather. Suddenly he was glad for the storm. Anything that made Ryo look this happy was fine with him.

The End
