In New York, summer was over and the fall was just getting underway. The leaves hadn’t started changing color yet, but the weather was growing cooler, and after dark it could get quite chilly.
Right now though, it was early afternoon, the sun still high in the sky and the weather pleasantly warm; perfect, in fact, for a stroll through Central Park.
“Sometimes I forget how much nature there is in the middle of the city,” Ryo commented as they strolled along a path bordered by trees. There were still flowers blooming, bees buzzing, several species of small birds flitting from branch to branch. There were squirrels too, scampering about, looking for nuts to bury, and roots and insects to supplement their diet.
“Yeah,” Dee agreed. “We’re lucky we’ve got this right in our backyard.”
They paused to watch a young squirrel industriously scratching at the ground.
“Think he knows what he’s lookin’ for?”
Ryo smiled. “Probably still learning.”
The peace was abruptly shattered by a dog barking, spooking the young squirrel which fled for safety, straight towards them, not stopping until he was perched on Dee’s head.
Dee froze in horror.
“Maybe he thinks you’re a tree,” Ryo snickered.
