Meriel didn’t understand adults at all. Not her daddies, she understood them perfectly; they loved her, and each other, even if they sometimes got cross. That was okay though, because she knew even if they weren’t speaking to each other, it wouldn’t be long before they kissed and made up.
No, it was other adults she didn’t understand, especially the parents of some of her schoolfriends.
“Don’t you wish you had a mummy?” her friend Tillie’s mummy had asked at Tillie’s birthday party.
“Why?”
“Well, having two daddies is a bit… unusual. Everyone else has a mummy and a daddy. Wouldn’t you like to have a mummy to do things with, like having tea parties, playing dress-up, or baking cakes.”
It was a silly question. “I don’t need a mummy for that. My daddy does all those things with me. He painted my fingernails for the party, and my toenails too. Taddy made my party dress, and Daddy knitted my cardi. He’s teaching me to knit.”
“Your daddy knits? That’s an unusual hobby for a man.”
“No it isn’t! Lots of men can knit and sew. Taddy told me. He knows everything!”
“But little girls need a mummy.”
“I don’t!”
