‘End of the work week,’ Dee thought, grinning. Not the weekend, because as a cop, weekends were often workdays, but the end of six consecutive days of investigating crime, and the beginning of two blissful days of leisure. For once the chores would have to wait; the next forty-eight hours were all about having fun.
Time was, when the end of shift came around and his days off loomed ahead of him, he’d be straight to the bar to get a buzz on, drinking until closing time then heading home to sleep it off, waking hungover, wrecked from partying. Not these days though.
“Ready?” Ryo said, appearing with his jacket slung over one arm. They’d both dressed casual today; it saved having to go home and change.
“Yep!” Dee’s grin widened as he grabbed his bag. “Let’s get this show on the road!”
Leaving straight from work meant they’d have the whole of the following day, plus most of the day after to enjoy themselves. It was only just over a two-hour drive, and they weren’t due back at work until 4pm on Thursday. Maybe he could persuade Ryo to stay on an extra night, make the drive back early Thursday morning; that would give them two whole days to experience a different kind of buzz altogether.
There’d be no alcohol this trip, not even a beer to unwind sitting by their campfire, and that was okay. Where they were going, they’d need their wits about them. Whitewater kayaking wasn’t something Dee would want to attempt hungover or half asleep.
He could hardly wait to get up in the mountains, park their car at base camp, and ride the jeep up to the rental place, where they’d spend the night before starting downriver at first light.
“It’s gonna be epic!”
