“If the apocalypse comes, beep me.” Buffy knows she’s being flippant even as she says it, but honestly, what does Giles expect? She’s a teenage girl and she has a date with one of the hottest boys in school. She’s already had to stand Owen up once, and she’s not blowing this second chance, prophecy or no prophecy. Besides, like she said, she’s got her pager, she can be reached in case of dire emergencies involving this Anointed One, whoever he, she, or it might be. It’s not like she’ll be completely out of touch.
It makes her wonder though… How did Watchers keep in contact with their Slayers before modern technology? Did they have to go everywhere together, with the watcher carrying an assortment of books and weapons, just in case they might be needed? Or did they use semaphore, or morse code to communicate over long distances?
Ooh, maybe they had a messenger service, some kid on a fast pony riding back and forth between the Watcher in his headquarters and the Slayer out on patrol. No, that would never work, it would be too easy for a messenger to be intercepted, killed, or turned. Maybe they used carrier pigeons… Or maybe the Watchers just trusted their Slayers to get on with the slaying and didn’t try to micromanage their lives down to the last detail.
Giles means well, he just wants to make sure she’s prepared for the next Big Bad to come along, but it’s a bit stifling.
Maybe she should suggest walkie talkies. They’re bulky and not exactly stylish, but the military uses them so they must be reliable and have pretty good range.
Life would be so much easier if she could just carry the phone around in her pocket. Like that’ll ever happen!
