Ryo sank slowly into the chair at his desk, careful not to jar himself, and slid it forward so he could reach his computer. Across from him, Dee winced in sympathy.
“You sure you should be back at work?”
“I’ll be fine,” Ryo gave his partner what was supposed to be a reassuring smile, but it looked more pained than anything. “It’s just bruising and a couple of cracked ribs. It’s not like I’ll be going out on the streets.” He’d be riding a desk for the next two or three weeks at least; the doctors at the hospital wouldn’t certify him as fit for normal duty until his ribs were healed sufficiently and he was off the pain meds.
“A couple?” Dee snorted. “Try four, and one of ‘em’s fractured, not just cracked.” One thing that annoyed him about his lover was that Ryo always played down his injuries. “Are ya takin’ your pain meds?”
“Yes, don’t be such a mother hen, Dee. The bus ride this morning was a bit rough, that’s all. The driver had to slam on the brakes.”
“You took the bus in?” Dee was horrified.
“What was I supposed to do, walk? The doctor said I shouldn’t drive, and I didn’t think riding the subway in rush hour would be a good idea. That left the bus or a taxi, and the bus was more convenient.”
“You should’a called me! From now on, I’m drivin’ you to and from work. Got it?”
“Yes, Dee.”
