Meriel frowned at her dinnerplate. She liked her Taddy’s sausage casserole very much, it was yummy and hot, just right for a miserably cold, rainy Saturday, but something didn’t make sense. She poked her food around her plate for a minute before asking,
“Taddy, where are the beans?”
“Beans?” Her Taddy sounded as puzzled as Meriel felt. “I never put beans in the sausage casserole, sweetheart.”
“I know, but when Auntie Tosh was here, she told you not to spill them, but if there aren’t any beans you wouldn’t be able to spill them anyway, so why did she tell you not to?”
At the other side of the table, her Daddy raised his eyebrows and looked at her Taddy.
“I think I’d like to know that too.”
Her Taddy was staring intently at his plate; maybe he was looking for the beans that weren’t there. Finally he looked up; his face was a bit pink.
“It’s a figure of speech, sweetheart, another way of asking someone not to give away a secret. Your Auntie Tosh told me something that she doesn’t want anyone else to know about yet.”
“So there aren’t any beans?”
“No.”
Meriel shrugged. Adults were strange.
