Who knew basketball skills could come in handy at work?
The innocent-looking package in front of a building about to be officially opened as a centre for disadvantaged kids was almost certainly a bomb of some description, but clearing the crowds from the area wasn’t an option. There were simply too many people there hoping to see the celebrity invited to cut the ribbon. Waiting for the bomb squad to arrive didn’t seem a good idea either; the device could be on a timer.
If it exploded, a lot of people were going to get hurt, maybe even killed, so Dee did the only thing he could think of. While his partner and the other detectives providing plain-clothes security tried to herd the nearest people back, he snatched the package up, then lobbed it with pin-point accuracy into a dumpster some ten metres away, just inside a nearby alleyway.

The package glanced off the dumpster’s open lid like a basketball hitting the backboard, dropped into the container, and the lid slammed down. Seconds later, the dumpster rocked violently with the force of the explosion. The lid partly opened, emitting a gout of flame as the trash inside ignited, then dropped back down, cutting off oxygen and hopefully extinguishing the flames.
The crowd cheered like it was some weird entertainment put on for their benefit, and someone shouted out, “Great shot!” Grinning, Dee took a bow.
“I can’t believe you did that!” Ryo said, reaching his partner. “What if it had gone off when you picked it up?”
“It was a risk, but I had to take it. ‘Sides, it looked a lot like the incendiary device planted outside the welfare office a couple weeks back, same string around it. Figured the best place for it was in the trash.”
