“We’re lost, aren’t we?” Dee grumbled as they walked, looking around himself for any sign of the campsite they’d left that morning.
“We’re not lost,” Ryo replied, chuckling. “We’re following the trail.”
“But we went uphill when we left and we’re still goin’ up. Shouldn’t we be goin’ down? You said we were headin’ back.”
“We are. I did suggest we take one of the shorter trails, but you said you’d be fine with the long one.”
“I am, I mean I’m not tired or anything. Ten miles is nothin’; I can do that easy. I just don’t wanna be stuck out in the middle of nowhere all night, at the mercy of the wildlife.”
“We won’t be.”
“Says you. How d’ya even know we’re goin’ in the right direction? Shouldn’t ya have your compass out or somethin’?”
“I don’t need a compass. The trails are clearly marked.”
“Maybe we’re on the wrong trail.”
Ryo shook his head. “Never knew you were such a worrywart.”
“I’m not, I’m just a bit outta my comfort zone is all.”
“I noticed. Relax, Dee. Enjoy the exercise and the scenery.”
“You’re sure we’re goin’ the right way?”
“Yes, I’m certain; I’ve walked this trail before. We’re only about a mile from the campsite now.”
“When’re we gonna start goin’ downhill?”
“We’re not. We’re coming from the opposite direction, so we have to go up.”
Dee glanced dubiously at his partner. “Guess I gotta take your word for it, but if we don’t see signs of civilisation soon, you’d better be ready to admit you got us lost. If we haveta call search and rescue, I’m blamin’ you!”
Ryo just grinned and took his lover’s hand. “Trust me, okay?”
Maybe one day Dee would be more comfortable in the wide outdoors, but not today.
