“What’cha doin’?” Dee asked, coming out of the bathroom, breath all fresh and minty from brushing his teeth, and finding his lover sitting cross-legged on the bed, writing in a notebook.

Ryo glanced up. “Writing in my diary. What does it look like?”

Dee flopped down onto the bed beside his partner. This was only their second night since Ryo had moved in with him, but Dee had thought he already knew everything there was to know about Ryo Maclean. Apparently not.

“You keep a diary? How come you never told me?”

“Because diaries are supposed to be private, and I didn’t want you snooping?” Ryo grinned teasingly at his partner.

“As if! I don’t snoop.”

“Really?”

“Okay, you’re right, I totally would’ve, but only to see what you’ve been writin’ about me. D’ya put in all the juicy details about what you want me to do to you, or what you wanna do to me? Those are things I need to know.” Dee shifted to his knees and peered over Ryo’s shoulder at the open book, half expecting his lover to slam it shut, but Ryo just laughed.

“Sorry to disappoint, but I don’t write anything so personal in my diary. I’d be too embarrassed someone might see. Can you imagine if Bikky would’ve found something like that and read it?” Even though his foster son was now eighteen and off at college, the thought of the boy reading intimate details of his love life made Ryo’s blood run cold, and he could feel his face heating up. “There are some things kids should NOT know about their parents!”

“So if ya don’t write about your love life, what d’ya find to write about?” Disappointingly, there were only a few sentences on the page open to Dee’s view, and they had to do with Ryo’s hopes that whoever moved into his old apartment would be kind to his elderly neighbour, Melinda.

“I write about friends, family, plans for the future, ideas about cases, and about the things that make me happy, or sad, or worried. Normal stuff.”

“But you don’t write about me?” Dee was hurt.

“Of course I do, just nothing... intimate. Here.” Ryo flipped back a few pages and showed his partner what he’d written about Dee helping him get everything packed, and how excited he was to be moving in with the man he loved. “See? I write about you all the time. The sweet things you do, the funny things you say... I even write about the times you annoy me, and the fights we have. Just nothing I’d be embarrassed for someone else to read.”

“So ya don’t write about sex at all?” Dee couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Why would I need to? If I were to forget the details, you’re right here to remind me.” Ryo closed his diary and set it aside.

He’d never tell Dee about his other diary, but Dee couldn’t read it anyway. Shorthand had its uses.
