“Maybe I should get you fitted for a suit of armor,” Dee teased as he helped his lover out of the car and up the stoop. “Might keep ya from gettin’ damaged so often.”
Ryo was torn between annoyance and amusement. “Can’t see you being too happy if I was encased in metal.”
“Yeah, it would seriously cut down on gropin’ opportunities. Still might be worthwhile though. Seriously, this is the fourth time you’ve been injured in the line of duty this year!”
“The sprained knee doesn’t count; I did that working out, so it’s only the third. Besides, how many is it for you, five?”
“We’re not talkin’ about me,” Dee grumbled, opening the door to their building. “And I don’t count the nail gun incident anyway. That was minor, but you’ve got a broken foot! You’ll be on desk duty for weeks. We should sue the bastard!”
Ryo paused in the foyer to frown at his partner. “How d’you sue a horse?”
“Not the horse, dumbass; the owner!”
“Dee! It’s hardly his fault the flashing lights and sirens spooked his horse! It’s just my bad luck that I happened to be in the way.”
The horse had been providing carriage rides in central park when several police cars had converged nearby looking to apprehend a gunman who’d just shot his ex and her new boyfriend. All the commotion had been too much for the poor animal, which had shied sideways as the two detectives were talking to its owner, knocking Ryo to the ground, and treading heavily on his foot, breaking a couple of small bones.
“Accidents happen; I don’t blame the horse or its owner, and anyway, it’s not that bad.”
“I still think armor’s a good idea.”
Ryo sighed. “I doubt it would’ve helped me today.”
