A/N: Double drabble.
When Jack joined Ianto in the cells, Janet, the resident Weevil, was huddled at the back of her cell, head tipped back as she let out a strange, keening sound. Normally, Weevils were silent; from the handful of studies done on them over the decades it had been concluded that they’d never developed a verbal language, despite being equipped with the necessary vocal organs, so this behaviour was unusual enough to be noteworthy.
Ianto, whose job it was to care for the residents, seemed concerned.
“What d’you think it’s doing?”
Jack watched the Weevil. It wasn’t the first time he’d heard one keen like this, although it was rare, and he didn’t like the answer he was about to give. It was easier to think of Weevils as monsters than as creatures with feelings and emotions.
“I think it’s weeping.”
He wished he could believe he was wrong, because if he was right…
Owen thought the reason Weevils didn’t use a verbal language was because they had some degree of telepathy, that they could share emotions over a distance. What one felt, its fellow Weevils could also feel. They experienced each other’s pain.
Somewhere out there, a Weevil was suffering.
