They were partners first, two cops assigned to watch each other’s backs while doing their jobs. The streets of New York could be dangerous, especially for detectives assigned to investigate the most serious crimes. Protecting your partner was an integral part of life for anyone in law enforcement, and it didn’t matter if you didn’t particularly like the person you worked with. Rule number one was that the safety of your partner was your responsibility. True, bad things could still happen, but you did what you could to minimise risk.

Right from the start, however, Dee had found extra motivation to keep his new work partner safe. There was nothing like a bit of primal lust to make a guy focus on the wellbeing of whoever he was working with. Hell, Dee didn’t just protect Ryo from the dangers of the job; he was just as committed to protecting his gorgeous partner from the situations Ryo manage to land himself in through simple inattention, like the time Commissioner Rose tried to smooch him in his office. Who knew what might have happened if Dee hadn’t stepped in and put a stop to Rose’s underhanded scheme?

If keeping his partner safe from harm had been important when they were nothing more than work colleagues and friends, now they were in a relationship nothing mattered more to Dee than his lover, not even his own safety.

Which, under present circumstances, made him kind of a dumbass. Ryo was a trained detective, an expert marksman, and had a black belt in karate, possibly judo too, judging by the way he just tossed that ape over his shoulder. Dee was no slouch himself when it came to fighting, he’d grown up on the streets, but he didn’t have the moves his partner did.

‘My own stupid fault,’ Dee thought muzzily. ‘If I hadn’t been so hell-bent on protecting Ryo, I would’a seen the other guy.’ Now he was down, with a knife wound in his poor, much abused left leg, his gun was out of reach, and Ryo was fighting off two attackers at once.

Damn, but he was good! He’d tossed the big ape at the other guy, the one with the knife, and now the ape was shrieking like a banshee, having been stuck with said knife when the smaller guy had gone down under him.

Ryo had his gun in hand now, aimed steady as a rock at the two men on the ground while he radioed for backup and paramedics. He circled the two attackers and nudged Dee’s gun within reach. Dee grabbed it awkwardly in his right hand since his left was busy clutching his injured leg. Thankfully, the knife hadn’t hit an artery.

“You okay, Dee?”

“I’ll live. Sorry, guess I wasn’t much help.”

“I wouldn’t say that. I didn’t see the other guy; if not for you I’d have probably got a knife in the back.”

“Instead, I got stabbed in the leg.”

“I owe you one.”
