“Road trip, WOOHOO!” Dee tossed his bag into the trunk and slammed it closed, eager to be off.
Ryo grinned at his partner, shaking his head. “You’ve never really grown up, have you?”
“Growin’ up’s overrated, babe. ‘Sides, this is gonna be fun!”
“You weren’t this enthusiastic last time we had a road trip.”
“Last time we had JJ and Drake in the car with us. This time, it’s just you and me and the open road between here and the West Coast! We don’t even need to rush, we’ve got two whole weeks; we can take our time, do some sight-seein’ along the way. Haven’t you ever wanted to drive right across the country?”
“Not really, but Bikky needs his car in L.A., and this is the best way to get it to him. We drive it there, then fly back.”
“Ah, c’mon! Ya can’t tell me you’re not lookin’ forward to this. We’ll trade off the drivin’ every couple of hours, find a motel every night, see a bit of our great country. You wanna flip to see who drives first?” Dee produced a coin from his pocket.
“No, you choose; we’ll both be done with driving by the time we get there. Almost two thousand eight hundred miles is more than enough for anyone.”
“Was a time I thought it would be pretty cool to be a long-distance trucker, criss-crossin’ the country, deliverin’ stuff wherever it was needed, but here I am, still livin’ in New York, and I’ve hardly seen anything. This trip is gonna change that; we’ll be passin’ through… what, nine, ten states?”
“I didn’t count, I just programmed the SatNav, but something like that.”
“SatNav? Are you nuts? Sure, that’ll give ya the most direct route, but all we’ll see is interstate most of the way. Where’s the adventure in that? I got a map book, marked a few places to visit. Might be a longer drive, but it’ll be worth it. We might never get another chance, babe. Whaddaya say?”
Ryo sighed. “Fine, we’ll do this your way, as long as we get to L.A. with a few days to spare before our flight home. I’d like to be able to spend some time with Bikky when we get there, see how he’s settling into college life.”
“Even with side trips we’ll be there in eight or nine days, ten at the most. Ready to get this show on the road?” Dee held up the car keys. “I’ll take first turn behind the wheel, get us outta the city.”
“Suit yourself. With luck we’ll beat the rush-hour traffic.” Ryo slid into the passenger seat as Dee got behind the wheel and started the engine. Before they’d gone a couple of miles, Dee started to sing…
“Go west, life is peaceful there, go west in the open air, go west where the skies are…”
“Dee!”
“What?”
“Village People? This is going to be a long drive.”
“Lighten up, babe, sing along!”
“You’re nuts.”
