Dee wandered over to the squad’s coffee pot, stared at the tarry contents for a moment, and shuddered.
“As much as I could use a caffeine fix about now, there’s no way I’m drinkin’ that swill. It’s bad enough at the best of times, but this new stuff is vile. Don’t know where anyone gets off callin’ it coffee. That’s an insult to the genuine article.”
“Coffee shop over the street will be open in forty-five minutes if you can wait that long.” Ryo told his partner. “If not, there’s always tea.”
“Not much caffeine in tea though, is there? Not sure I can stay awake without coffee.”
“Half the time you don’t stay awake even WITH coffee,” Ryo teased.
“Third shift is inhuman. People aren’t designed to stay awake and work all night.”
“And yet thousands of people around the world still have to do it, including cops. Criminals don’t clock off in the evenings. Half of them don’t get going until after dark.”
“I know all that. Doesn’t mean I haveta like it.” Dee sighed and reached for his jacket. “There’s a twenty-four-hour convenience store a couple of blocks away. Think I’ll take a stroll down there, see if they stock energy drinks. You wanna come with?”
It was just as well Ryo agreed to accompany his partner, because they arrived at the store just in time to nab a couple of youths on their way out with the contents of the cash register and a carton of cigarettes. Dee shook off his lethargy.
Hauling the would-be thieves back to the precinct, he grinned at his partner. “Who needs caffeine or energy drinks anyway? Amazin’ the way a shot of adrenaline can wake ya right up. By the time it wears off, it’ll be the end of shift.”
