Dee knew his way around leaks; he could fix dripping taps and leaky pipes, patch roofs and seal windows, deal with oil leaks in his car, check and repair the radiator and its hose, and change a tire in the event of a slow leak. He was even familiar with preventing information leaks. None of which helped him right now. It was pouring with rain, the sidewalks awash with water, and his new boots had sprung a leak.
Technically it was only the left one, the right one was fine so far, but what use was one good boot in this weather? He could feel the wetness soaking into his sock, getting steadily worse, and squelching unpleasantly with every step. He could keep most of himself dry under his umbrella, and yet here he was trudging around the city with one wet foot. Uncomfortable didn’t begin to describe it.
“Dammit, I only bought these boots last week, and they weren’t cheap! They’re supposed to keep my feet dry in wet weather! Might as well go barefoot for all the good they’re doin’!”
“I wouldn’t advise it,” Ryo said. “Going barefoot at home is one thing, but out here there’s grit and broken glass, you’d probably cut yourself, and besides, it’s a bit cold for paddling.”
“I wasn’t seriously considerin’ takin’ my boots off, although I might have to stop and empty the water out soon. Got a good mind to pay a visit to the shop where I bought ‘em and demonstrate how badly they’re leakin’ by pourin’ the water out on their floor. Would’a been better off with my old boots; they might look a bit worn but at least I know they’re watertight.”
He plodded onwards, teeth gritted. If he didn’t get a full refund there’d be trouble!
