In the classroom Bikky is like a fish out of water, one of those kids who tries his best but is never likely to be much more than an average student. Still, he’s made a huge improvement from the days when he was towards the bottom of the class. He still doesn’t understand everything they’re trying to teach him, and there are times he really struggles, especially when it comes to geometry and calculus, but his teachers all say he works hard and is genuinely trying. These days, while his grades are seldom above a C+, that’s still enough to put him firmly in the middle of his class, maybe even a little higher. The effort he’s been making over the past three or four years is starting to pay off.

On the basketball court it’s a different matter entirely; he’s in his element there. Where academic subjects might baffle him and make his brain hurt, put a basketball in his hands and he knows exactly what to do with it, running rings around the opposition, dribbling the ball like a miniature version of the Harlem Globetrotters, and when he makes a jump shot, leaping high into the air, you’d swear there were springs in his shoes.

The Coach is impressed, says the boy has natural talent. Bikky has been a starter for the team since his freshman year at high school, and now as a junior scouts are already beginning to show an interest in him. He just needs to grow a bit more, but that shouldn’t be a problem; he’s hit a growth spurt recently. In the last three months he’s outgrown all of his clothes, including his basketball kit, much to Ryo’s dismay. Buying new clothes for his boy cost him the earth and in a few months’ time Ryo knows he’ll probably have to splash out again because Bikky’s still growing, and yet he’ll do it, without complaint. That’s what good parents do.

Basketball is the air that Bikky breathes. He has a dream, a burning ambition, and Ryo is prepared to do whatever it takes to give his foster son a chance at fulfilling it, especially since the boy is equally willing to do his part, keeping his grades up and burning the midnight oil to cram for tests.

If there’s any justice in the world, Bikky Goldman Maclean will make it to the top.

The End
