There was something weird going on, Dee just knew it; he was a detective, he noticed things, and his instincts had been honed by years on the job. He didn’t know what his colleagues were up to, but whatever it was, they were excluding him from it. They were trying to be casual but he wasn’t fooled, not for a second.
There was the way they went quiet the moment he appeared, drifting away from each other as though they hadn’t just been deep in whispered conversation.
Then there were the furtive glances darted his way when they thought he wasn’t looking; he resisted staring suspiciously back at them, for the moment playing along, pretending he hadn’t noticed anything, but as soon as no one was looking at him he headed for the men’s room and checked himself in the mirror, trying to figure out what they’d been looking at.
It did no good; he looked the same as ever, his hair jet black and casually styled, nothing stuck in his teeth, no smears of ink or food or dirt.
End of shift finally came, and that’s when it happened; Dee was about to put his coat on when Drake asked if he could spare a minute.
“Sure; what is it?” He followed Drake to the break room, and the moment he stepped through the door…
“Surprise!”
Everyone was there, along with a birthday cake smothered in chocolate frosting, thirty candles burning brightly.
“Happy thirtieth birthday, Dee!” Ryo smiled at his partner.
A surprise birthday party? That was what all the weirdness had been about?
Dee grinned. “Thanks, guys, I had no idea!” Yeah, right! Okay, so he hadn’t known they were throwing him a party, but he’d known something was going on. He just hadn’t had time to investigate otherwise he absolutely would’ve figured it out. No need to tell his friends that though. “This is fantastic! Ryo, you make the cake?”
“Of course. Blow out your candles and make a wish!”
Dee didn’t need telling twice, and thankfully no one had thought to use trick candles; they went out with a single puff, to the accompaniment of a camera whirring, and then Dee was cutting his cake, serving his friends, and giving himself an extra large slice. He deserved it.
They were nuts, but it was good to have friends, even if they were terrible at keeping secrets.
