Thursday and Friday, the tile guys were here, and tiled the two small bedrooms (the larger one is my office; the smaller one is the bird room). They were done by 10am on Friday, and they did a great job.
Friday around noon, my in-laws (Bobby's two brothers plus one sister-in-law, who is the wife of Bobby's oldest brother) made the four-hour drive up from SW Florida to help us work on the house. It was very chilly here -- in the 50s midday on Friday (and 30 degrees warmer at the corresponding time today). It was a bit of a shock to the South Florida contingent, who drove up wearing shorts and golf shirts (Gloria also cooked a ton of food and brought it with her -- it kept us fed all weekend, and was DEE-licious). We ate lunch, they started painting, and I left to take Molly for her rabies shot. When I got back, I worked with Bobby's middle brother to put together two large bookcases and two smaller bookcases.
The bird room was to be a soft, silvery sage green -- at least, according to the paint I chose from the chip in Lowe's. It turned out to be a light spring green instead (not lime, not mint, but something sort of in between, and surprisingly pretty. The woodwork and interior side of the door are a French vanilla shade. The closet bifold doors (which definitely need a second coat) are a medium golden-green, which I chose from the same paint chip; it's true to the chip, and is a nice accent, but in the same color family, since it has a lot more yellow in it. The tile in there is a buff shade with grey veining, and the grout is a soft grey.
The office is a pale aqua, almost the same shade as my room back in NJ. It has white trim and doors, and the tile is a pale grey with a blueish-grey veining; the grout is the same soft grey.
The laundry room is a light spring green, but it's darker than I'd thought (probably because there are no windows). The interior doors are a much lighter shade of green in the same family.
The second bath is a light, pearly grey, which I thought was going to be just a bit darker, according to the paint chip. It doesn't hit you over the head, and is very pretty. The same color continues out into the small hallway that connects the two bedrooms and the bath, tying the hall and bath together. The trim and doors in the hallway and the bath will be a mushroomy-colored cream (yes, she who is deathly allergic to mushrooms chose a shade close to Instant Death. Ironic, eh?).
The only things we didn't get done in a half day of work on Friday, a full day on Saturday, and three hours this morning were the trim in the laundry room and the trim/doors in the second bath and hall. My in-laws are true painting dynamos! It would have taken us a week or more to do what they did in a couple of days. And they're meticulous, as well.
The birds won't go into their room until I'm absolutely certain the fumes are gone. Since I still need to give the closet doors in there a second coat (man, are they streaky!), I don't see that happening until Thursday. But we have two desks to put together (one for each room) and two TV stands (ditto), then I have to redo the hookups for the satellite receivers and DVD recorders/VCRs in both rooms, so we'll be occupied until they can go into their new digs.
Pepper was hysterical while they were here. She's usually very quiet when people she doesn't know very well are here, but she was on stage all weekend. She said her name ("Pepper Agel!") constantly, called the dogs, repeatedly asked what we were doing and what was going on, and demanded pizza. I don't think my in-laws realized how chatty this little girl is.
The dogs were upset by all the comings and goings, but things will settle down now -- the washer and dryer should be here within a week (I hope!), and the sofa and chairs will be here in January. With luck, we'll have most of the boxes cleared out of the living room by then.... I have a couple of lighted ornaments in the dining room window, and we bought a small pre-lighted Christmas tree for the living room. That will be up by the end of the week. Next year, we'll get a bigger one and do it up right.
