Because that demo is so ingrained in them, that even common sense won't make a dent.
They go on and on about the older viewer being a waste of time, even though the money is in that demo, because they went to get the younger viewers who haven't become slaves to brand loyalty. Well, I just read a story yesterday which pointed out that over 60% of Boomers have no brand loyalty at all. Hey, we love trying new stuff -- new stuff on the shelf translates into new stuff in our cart.
