And whom do *you* ship for?

Mar 29, 2009 11:20

My mind has been whirling lately, thinking about retiring, eventually leaving behind everything I've (we've) known for all of our 5+ decades. I try to give the poor gray matter some respite, but at this time of the year (still grey, still just a bit too cold to go out in the yard and work -- damnit!), I don't have the pleasure of puttering around in the yard. I can't write -- the muse is still off hiding somewhere.

So my thoughts turn to my comfort zone -- fandom. My fan friends know me as a hopeless romantic. That said, I don't see ship in every show/movie series. Something about the couple has to grab me. So...as a pretty-much lifelong shipper (before the term was actually coined), here's my list; I'll try to keep it in chronological order (and I hope I don't forget anyone):

Major Don West and Judy Robinson. That one leaped out at me, and I was only 10 years old. Call it incipient hormones, but I was always frustrated by the way this relationship was ignored. Yeah, LiS became a kid's show, but I was a kid, damnit! The Dr.Smith-Will dynamic was not why I watched the show (it is, however, the reason why I only bought season 1 on DVD).

Captain Hawkeye Pierce, MD and Major Margaret Houlihan, RN. Opposites attract (and are my husband and I ever living proof of that -- but that's beside the point). I always wanted them to end up together, and a few years ago I started a story in which they did, a few years postwar -- then misplaced the file folder with the scenes I'd written. It's around here somewhere....  I see them as eventually getting married, and adopting a few Korean war orphans.

Han Solo/Princess Leia Organa. I saw this one coming from the line in SW, "You think a princess and a guy like me..." The first fanfic I ever had published, way back in printzines in the early 80s.

Kyle Reese/Sarah Connor. "I came back through time for you, Sarah. I love you." Turned me into a pile of goo. I still can't watch the ending. After the scene in the motel room is over -- I turn it off.

Corporal Dwayne Hicks/Ellen Ripley. In no way, shape or form does Michael Biehn look like a 'Dwayne' -- but I'll watch him read the phone book.

Will Riker/Deanna Troi.Took them long enough, and that ridiculous Worf/Troi detour still makes me want to wash out my brain.

Scully/Mulder. Took them long enough #2.

Commander Harmon Rabb/Colonel Sarah MacKenzie. Man, did DPB screw the shippers (intentionally) with his treatment of this one. He purposely kept them apart as long as he could, because some of the more rabid shippers wrote to him demanding they be put together. Instead of ignoring the e-mail messages as he should have, he gave in to spite.

Odo/Kira Nerys. I know the actors weren't thrilled with this one, but they really sold it, especially Rene Aberjonois. That man could emote more behind latex than most actors with an unencumbered face.

Dr. Julian Bashir /Jadzia Dax. I found the Jadzia/Worf relationship to be contrived. I also found the Julian/Ezri relationship just as contrived.

Captain Sam Carter/Colonel Jack O'Neill. I saw this one from the very first episode I saw (which wasn't until the end of second season). I was involved in the Shipper/Slasher wars, and it wasn't pretty. Some of the slashers are still in denial, and the shippers still want a definite resolution.

Chris Larrabee/Mary Travis. Michael Biehn again. ;) Are you sensing a trend yet?

Josh Lyman/Donna Moss. Cute couple.

Jayne Cobb/Kaylee Frye. I hated the Kaylee/Simon thing -- it felt forced, and I always thought he looked down on her. But Jayne and Kaylee had a lot in common.

Jayne Cobb/River Tam. All right, so I'm schizoid. But something about the potential of these two together appealed to me

Abby Sciutto/Tim McGee. They're just too adorable together.

Jethro Gibbs/LTCOL Hollis Mann. They made a great couple, and I was sorry to see her leave the show. Gibbs is such a wounded heart.

Tony DiNozzo/Ziva David. I have my doubts that, in the event they actually get together onscreen, they'll be allowed to remain so. But the potential is there.

Commander Charles Tucker III/Commander T'Pol. The latest in a long line. I love them together, and they had so much potential. The abomination that is These Are the Voyages doesn't exist, as far as I'm concerned. Trek fans were robbed of three more seasons thanks to Les Moonves (who also is the recipient of hatred from Mag7 fans) and his lack of forethought. Insisting that the demos skewed male shows a complete lack of understanding of Trek fans. Women (and girls -- yes, I was one of those teens writing letters to NBC) saved the show initially, and their support brought it back as a movie series. But the idiots who run network TV have one Holy Grail -- the male viewer. Whether or not said male viewer watches the show or not, those are the eyes they want staring at the screen -- disregarding the fact completely that the power of the purse resides in female hands in this country. Don't believe me? Take a look around your local supermarket, Costco, or Wal-mart. Yeah, you'll see men -- but damned few of them are alone. Most of the shoppers loading up those carts are female. Yet we're ignored -- especially females of my age, the over-48 demographic.

Didn't mean to go off like that -- but I still get ticked off at the way programmers have no connection to the real world.
