LITTLE DID I KNOWWWW. also, he totally draws little stick figures of them, and like. makes himself ridiculously tall and louis short, and maybe louis finds one and is very upset about the height difference
so much so that he doesn't notice the little love hearts in drawing!Harry's eyes.
also, HARRY TOTALLY PUTS A RING ON IT. it's not his fault that Louis talks about how his favourite item at the sweets store where he works is the lolly rings. because they're romantic.
and so harry pops in when Louis' not working and asks Niall what Louis' favourite flavour is
AND HE'S CONVINCED HIMSELF (MOSTLY) THAT IT"S JUST NICE
a gift bc louis got him something
and then he does a fake proposal
but only because Zayn's sisters were there! and insisted!
(Louis is taking them there bc school is going to start soon and they need just the right colour of marker to doodle Mrs Harry Styles on their books with)

(also, as for where Zayn is, he's standing outside with Liam, making sure the puppies from Liam's dogwalking business don't run off while the girls are inside. because LIAM AND PUPPIES)
but Harry's just doing it to be nice!
if he secretly sets aside a pen for himself because he knows Louis loves that colour blue well... no one really cares.

(Liam's come out the best in this situation - his boyfriend gets cool new presents from his best friend all the time, he gets to spend more time with his boyfriend now that Zayn's not busy looking after his sisters, he gets to watch his best friend play dress ups more often than he does with his actual sisters, and the puppies are actually really loving the walks around town - Harry's store is across town from Louis and Liam's neighbourhood)
(ps Louis bikes to work every day, then after work he goes to Harry's store (when he can afford to buy something (don't wanna look too desperate)) and sometimes he and harry bike home)
(even if Harry does live further down the street from the stationery store (and therefore further out of Louis' way) (he just wants to make sure his friend gets home safe) (and sometimes Anne will gift him some cookies for him and his sisters, and will always ask after his mum) )

my big bang fic was going to be a Zayn/Niall/Liam university AU wherein Liam constantly pines after Zayn and Niall encourages lots of functional polyamory!
I think I may have mentioned it to you briefly once. but the notes for this fic:
so zayn and liam are totally renting out a flat together in their third year of university and liam's only been pining after zayn since maybe the third day of their first semester together (social media class or something for Zayn's BA in creative writing/visual art (double major yo) and liam's dual degree in sports/journalism (do they even have dual degrees in the UK? do I even care?)) so it's really not that big a deal.
I mean, if sometimes Liam will spend more time flicking through their photo albums than actually tidying up the place, well, that's just reminiscing, not pining (and he constantly thanks God that Louis doesn't tease him mercilessly about it. any more. (he chooses to ignore the fact that louis stopped because "it's no longer funny, just a little bit sad"))
so they're renting a place together and maybe liam has one too many nights spent in studying while zayn is out, because it's easier than watching him grind up on some girl (or guy) (or both) at ridiculously parties.
speaking of which, he wasn't even aware they had a party scene out here, but apparently they do, since harry comes along every other night or so to drag zayn and liam out. liam promptly drags himself back in and maybe wallows in his misery and a mug of hot cocoa.
(louis once tried to spike the mug, but liam caught him in time and made louis stay in as punishment and watch love actually with him. there are perks to living near your childhood friend/torment, a good supply of free ice cream is one of them.)

so basically liam and zayn are all happy room mates and liam is kind of sort of maybe in love with zayn but it's totally cool.
at least he doesn't do long term relationships (or hasn't, not since they've met at least) (discounting how they actually met, when zayn was dating perrie and then broke up with her and liam found him in the student centre trying very hard not to talk about it to harry, who, of course, wanted to talk about everything, except, "It really was amicible, Harry, so could you let it drop?")
because it would maybe possibly probably break liam's heart, should zayn ever get into a relationship.
