Nikki wasn’t going anywhere for ten years. Ten. It didn’t matter how many times you read the judge’s recommendation, or the amount of times you shakily thumbed through Nikki’s confession. Ten years; minimum.
God. And that confession. You made it through it the first time, feeling like you might be sick right there. Hours after, that feeling didn’t fade.
A cold-blooded murder. Cold. Even after she explained it you, there was this coldness tightening in your chest. Like perhaps you were just a little bit guilty as well, because you were in love with her.

“I’m being as calm as I bloody can,” she mutters. “Oh God, Helen. It’s all over, isn’t it?”
You pour her a vodka shot. “Sweet’eart…”
She gives you a look, downing the liquid. She pours herself another. “I can’t believe this.”
“It isn’t over.”

She’s insane. She actually gives you a smile, a big loving smile. Maybe she’s thinking about what San Francisco sun will feel like, or about what she’ll do when you’re all hers. Maybe she actually believes you’d defy the law for her.
“Let’s go,” she says.
You wonder right then if she knows you at all.
