I came out as trans this year (2021). I'm 44 now and I have always known l was trans but the reasons l didn't come out sooner come down to a lack personal confidence and following and being affected by learnt behaviours within a misogynistic culture. Now, finally being in a job and round people l know would support me l have been able to address my issues.
This is key to any persons confidence. You have to be able to be honest about who you are or it can have a detrimental affect on how you work, live and conduct yourself with others. When you sense people are approachable and the environments you socialise and work in are promoting positive values you feel like you don't need to fight to be who you are. I, like most trans people or anyone who doesn't fit into a simple binary of male/female, have experienced negativity and in younger life l made the mistake of internalising that and trying to change myself rather than fighting it. Its hard to do that if you feel you are a lone voice. This is why it is of great importance to promote inclusion, diversity and openness in any working environments. Someone like me might be hiding away unable to be their best self, not because of avert bullying or transphobia (although they do exist), but simply because there is no framework around to see yourself in. Sometimes a rainbow flag or a trans badge on a persons lapel can mean the world to you. Those small things which cost nothing can change worlds.
