La Musique Adoucit Les Moeurs - Gurl Powah.

Jun 08, 2013 18:49

For those of youse who ain't speaking Frog, it's a saying: "music softens behaviours"

erries posted about Laura Marling recently (see my previous post on this singer) - and it made me want to dedicate my next entry to music. Yes, I do have lots and lots of very important things to do, emails to write, work to plan, house to clean..etc. Kindly fuck off for the day my adult self.

My musical tastes could not be more eclectic. I love Eurythmics and Jimi hendrix, Suzanne Vega and Motorhead. The only musical genre I can't stand is Reggae which I've always found repetitive and tedious. And I don't think I'm clever or fashionable enough to "get" Jazz. Death Trash Metal or whatever the youngun's are calling it these days is not my thing either but I'm quite partial to Iron Maiden and old school hard rock.

I tend to hate most of the *cough* drivel *cough* tunes I hear on the radio.

I only listen to music in my car or when I exercise, to be honest. I can't concentrate or follow conversations if there is music in the background which means there is very rarely music playing inside my house - unless I'm cleaning it. ( Laundry gets folded at a much brisker pace if I'm listening to "Ace of Spades" *g*)

I don't really know what's going on in the music world and am often way behind on who's who. Once in a blue moon I go on a reputable music website like Rolling Stones or NME or Les Inrockuptibles (French mag); I go through their top albums of the years or the decade, listen to the listed singers on YouTube and make my choice. This method has always served me well, with one downside. It takes bloody ages!!!

Wouldn't it be nice if I could find kindred spirits who share my tastes in music and could direct me towards singers or bands I've never heard of?

But enough ramblings. To start with, here is a list of female singers I like. I'm sticking to Anglo Saxon singers for now or my list would crash this post. Some are famous, some less so. Take a look dear F-list and see if you can add to it.

AIMEE MANN. Pavlov's Bell from my favourite album of hers: Lost in Space. Aimee Mann pwns music. That is all. The only person I would consider going to see in concert, and considering how much I hate going to concerts (5'1, armpit level + sensitive eardrums)that's saying something.

AGNES OBEL - Riverside from the album Philarmonics. A little known but talented Danish singer. I simply adore this song.

FIONA APPLE. Limp from her second album When the Pawn... It has one of the best "Oooh I wish I'd written that" line: "You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun."

SUZANNE VEGA - Blood Makes Noise - from the album 99.9F. I don't like everything from Ms Vega but I love this album.

MARIA MCKEE - This Property Is Condemned from the album Maria McKee. She used to be part of the group Lone Justice. Check out her Tom Petty cover "Ways to be Wicked" .

GWEN STEFANI/NO DOUBT - Just A Girl from the album Tragic Kingdom. Okay, Hollaback Girl was fun but I much prefered GS when she was part of No Doubt.

SHERYL CROW - A Change Would Do You Good - from her second album Sheryl Crow. This is the song I was listening to when I moved to the UK. I guess the oh-so cryptic line: "Scully and angel on the kitchen floor" made the song even more special to me.

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER - I Feel Lucky - from the album Come On Come On. The ultimate feel good song. I especially love this video: "Girls can't play guitar". Yeah, you show 'em Mary. *nods*

CHRISSIE HYNDE/ THE PRETENDERS - Tatooed Love Boy from their first album Pretenders.
Yep, it was the song that was playing in the "crummy bar" where Ed Jerse took Scully right before she got herself an Inkgasm.

HEATHER NOVA - Winter Blue from the album Sirens. Not that many people know about her, and that's a damn shame.

EDDI READER/FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION - The Moon Is Mine from the album The first of a million kisses - "Perfect" was the hit from this album but this one never fails to put me in a good mood. I saw Eddi Reader in concert (I did!) in London many years ago and her voice is even more amazing in real life.

ANNIE LENNOX/EURYTHMICS - Who's That Girl from the album Touch. I wasn't gonna go for the planetary famous Sweet Dreams was I? Lennox is without a doubt one of the great voice of this century. Just listen to I Need A Man or Sister Are Doing It For Themselves if you need further proof. I used to collect Eurythmics records (showing my age here). I guess that makes me as much of a die hard fan as I'll ever be to a music group. Well, except for Kim Wilde, but I was 11.

FLORENCE WELSH/ FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE - A Kiss With A Fist from Lungs. Domestic violence is nothing to sing about, but obviously Florence didn't get the memo. Admit it though, it's just so damn peachy!

JANELLE MONAE - Come Alive from the album Archandroid. This one is a weird bird indeed. Honestly, listening to just one song is like listening to one song on Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars: you just won't get the whole picture. Archandroid is a concept album with a storyline and the songs varies so much in styles and rhythm, it is very hard to pinpoint a genre (funk, hip hop, folk, electro-pop, glam rock, big-band jazz, rock, and classical music according to the Washington Post). One thing is sure, the girl has talent.

KIM RICHEY - A Place Called Home from the album Rise. This was used as soundtrack in "Angel" for a particularly sad episode. It's such a lovely song (shame there is no official video for it).

LEAH ANDREONE - It's alright it's OK from the album Veiled. This was apparently a hit single but I haven't heard of her since. Maybe I should find out.

AZELIA BANKS - 212 (no album released yet, I think.) And now for something completely different. It's a...er...I'm not sure, a techno rap with a Western tune bridge? Anyway, I LOVE this song, don't ask me why, it's just like nothing I've heard before and it's got one hell of a rebelious attitude about it.  "And you kiss your mother with that mouth, young lady?" are the words that comes to mind.
