Finally, a Sweeney Todd fanfic writer was brave enough to tell the story of a young woman who wrestles with gender identity issues and Judge Turpin. I think that's what's happening here, anyway. My comments are in bold.
All Around MeAutumn is a young woman in society, leading a double-life, when she's meets Anthony, she thrust into a spiral of evil she can't get out of. OC/? maybe OC/Anthony
How innocent do you have to be in the first place for Anthony Hope to corrupt you? What's he going to do, anyway? Introduce her to the forbidden joys of walking outside after dark, looking at girls, and occasionally leaving one's collar unbuttoned? Truly, he is a degenerate of the worst sort.
After a short opening chapter about Mr. Todd sulking and laughing evilly, we meet our heroine:
When Autumn Edwards would tell her mother that she was window-shopping with her girlfriends, she was really helping out by the docks, gaining experience as a male sailor in hopes to one-day sail to the Americas.
Sssh, nobody tell her that she's actually a longshoreman, not a sailor.
Historical innacuracies aside, why a male sailor, specifically? Is Autumn transgender? Because that could be interesting if done...well, not like this.
As it turns out, even transgender teenaged longshoremen have to go to what appears to be Catholic school, because...yeah. We're introduced to her friends, Clara and Dan. Yes, this is a Victorian English co-ed Catholic school. Enter the teacher:
In the lesson, the nun, Ms. Cavers walked in, her prude and cruel eyes surveying the class. She sniffed at the girls whose chests were inappropriately shown.
Ms. Cavers: Ew, you all smell like Axe Body Spray. What gives?
Anyway, I don't know much about nuns, but I do know that they're called Sister (or Mother) [insert saint's name here]. Also, it is highly innappropriate to flash them.
We are introduced to Autumn's enemies:
The leader of the pack happened to be a very rude Bridgett Whithers. Bridgett was grudgingly pretty, but had a very large obnoxious
-tract of land?
attitude. It was a wonder she has already been proposed to. Of course it was a proposal by none other than the sleaziest boy in Autumn's year. Walter Breton was his name. Very promiscuous, so you wouldn't want to be caught in a bad alley with him.
Yeah, he might propose to you. *shivers*
Also, promiscuous =/= predatory.
All said and done, obviously Autumn, Clara and Dan would have a problem conforming to the group.
-because of their mutant powers.
They went against all their morals. Whereas Autumn would only have a sip at celebrations, ho-hum, her butler and suitor would carry Bridgett back to her home.
So, the girl enjoys her claret a little too much. Like Autumn and her friends don't have flaws. Please.
Later that afternoon, Autumn runs into Anthony and the beggar woman while wearing her sailor rig:
"Young man, it looks like you got plenty there to push," the beggar woman sang, eyeing his crotch.
"Whoa there, woman! Just take this and be off!" Autumn had rushed up and handed the beggar a coin and shooed her away. "I'm sorry you had to see that sir. I wish to know your name though." She gazed up at his height, and shook his hand.
Anthony: Look at me, I'm Anthony, lousy with virginity! Won't go to bed 'til I'm legally wed! I can't! I'm Anthonyyyyy!
Seriously, though, if Autumn feels the need to shield Anthony from prostitutes, he's probably not the right fellow to corrupt her. Just saying.
The rest of the chapter is hard to spork, because it's pretty cute in an inept way. Also, a lot of shitty things happen to Autumn. Judge Turpin tries to blackmail/seduce/force her into sex and her mother kicks her out of the house for her crossdressing ways, but it's okay because Anthony finds her and brings her to Mr. Todd's place. Yay?
I'll leave you with one last exchange:
"Well. I'd like to think that when one door closes another one opens." Anthony said, breaking the silence.
"That was so cheesy, Annie,"
"Did you really just call me Annie?" He said, flexing the non-existent muscles on his arm.
Oh, he must have some muscles in his arm. He wouldn't be able to lift it otherwise.
