This episode lost me at 'South Hampton', I never quite recovered from the stupidity and the dreadful accent of the sailor(?) to get into it after that.
This whole episode was about Damon for me, his hurt over Lily, his guilt over the cure, his stress over Stefan and just his pretty expressions about everything. I know that Lily is a horrible mother but hearing and seeing Damon's face when he realized just how bad she was was painful and heartbreaking. Plus I hated that Stefan got a hug from her (no matter how staged) and Damon is left on the sidelines.
As much as I liked the quiet ending with DE, I had a hard time watching the episode knowing about Nina and feeling that there wasn't enough Damon and Elena moments in it and enough time left in the season to give me everything that I've waiting 6 seasons for. It was just hard to focus on what was on screen when you knew it was ending. But then I''d get distracted by Ian and would need to refocus.
Also as an aside, Matt just killed because it was so sad and I was so proud of him for taking a stand even if I don't completely agree with it.
Every episode is all about Damon for me, always has been always will be, I'm afraid, so I agree with you totally. All the stuff with Lily is SO GOOD--so TRAGIC, and I'm really enjoying it. It's really good casting. But it lends to what we already know about Damon--that he soldiers thru this sort of thing, that he looks out for his little brother, and that he knows that Elena loves him so much. And in the end, he will love her in that selfless way we've all come to recognize and he'll "let her go" ... but I still have no idea where that's going to lead. *DYING*
I was really happy with Matt's arc, too, though it's painful. But I loved that he's come into his own and figured things out.
I really don't know how I will cope with these final four episodes. Just, emotional basket case.
Hmmmm....well 'satisfying' is a relative term for a shipper, and I know Dries is a shipper, but I'm so very uncertain of everything at this point that I'm just making wild guesses based on some of the alt-theories I've seen. I just can't believe it's gonna come down to a mind-wipe, as that's the most predictable thing in the world? But who knows, maybe they will gut me yet. D: D: D: D:
